What are cookies

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer when browsing on a website or using a web application.
These files contain information of various kinds that are designed to enrich the functionality of a website (for example purchases online or customizing messages based on your preferences), to collect statistical data and generally improve your browsing experience.

Type of cookies and purposes

There are different types of cookies, which are categorised in relation to their characteristics and usage, in accordance with this scheme:

Session cookies / Permanent cookies

Session cookies are stored temporarily in the computer memory whilst visiting a website (for example to keep track of the selected language). Session cookies are stored for a short period of time, and deleted when the browser is closed.
Permanent cookies, on the other hand, remain on the computer for a long period of time, depending on the expiry time set when the cookie is generated. These cookies allow websites to memorise information also for subsequent visits by the user, for example by avoiding having to enter your login credentials again.

First-party cookies / Third-party cookies

First-party cookies are set by the websites themselves (with a domain similar to that indicated in the browser's address bar) and can only be read by those sites.
Third-party cookies, on the other hand, are set by domains other than those indicated in the browser's address bar, i.e. by organizations that do not correspond to the website owners. These cookies, for example, are used to collect information for advertising purposes and for content customisation, as well as to track visits to the website.

Technical cookies / profiling cookies

Technical cookies are essential for the proper functioning of a website or an application: without them the site may not work properly or inhibit altogether certain functions.
Profiling cookies are used to collect and store information about the visitor (for example the pages visited, searches carried out, etc.) in order to offer more targeted advertising messages in line with their interests.

Cookies used on the websites

The website could install on the visitor's computer one or more third-party cookies, shown here below:
